Project Summary

The Fas Project Africa campaign was completed in Sierra Leone, where nearly 70% of the male and 80% of the female population are illiterate. The Campaign impacted the lives of school children, especially orphans.

The campaign began in partnership with local orphanages. Through sales of surf merchandise, the campaign provided children with desperately-needed school supplies and funded an after-school program teaching children how to swim, surf and skate. Surfers and skaters donated their time to teach children, simultaneously leaving a positive mark on extreme sports culture.

Campaign Goal

The campaign’s primary purpose was to equip local teachers and orphan-students with the tools and supplies needed in their schools. Additionally, the team at-risk children opportunities to learn to use skateboards and surfboards as healthy lifestyles and means of confronting the hardships and social challenges they are facing.

The Challenges

40 % of kids in Sierra Leone have suffered stunting or impaired growth that can permanently damage cognition

3 in 10 children are child beggars who ask for food or money as a means of survival

Moveable business – a child moving from one place to another with some form of business; typically carrying items for sale.

Nearly 30% of children in Sierra Leone are uneducated.

Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) – any child either engaging in or advertising herself with a view to engaging in transactional sex.

Permanently on the Street – any child found on the streets during the late-night counts (between midnight and 4 am).

Nearly one out of every two children are obliged to work in order to help support the needs of their family. Some find work as domestics; thousands of others, however, end up working under extremely dangerous conditions and sometimes die as a result.
